12. Looping Surfaces

2019 | Object

Domestic art forms such as weaving and crochet were the inspiration for early experiments in computation and digital fabrication. Inspired by the work of artist Ruth Asawa, Looping Surfaces investigates fabrication through the lens of American Craft culture. The trial and error of hand crocheting result in the conflation of the process and product to form a minimal surface. A plane is expanded along a two dimensional axis to create a 3 dimensional object as the radius of the crochet circle expands at a faster rate than its area causing the surface to compress and fold in on itself. In the end, this project serves as a testament to traditional methods of making and the long duree of hand crafting as still having a place as a technology among computational design.
